QA engagements start by mapping risk, not writing test cases — where does a bug actually cost money or trust, and where is a bug merely annoying — because a test pyramid built without that map ends up either too thin where it matters or bloated with brittle end-to-end tests everywhere. The first decision a client faces is how much to automate now versus later: automating a feature that's still changing weekly wastes effort on tests that get rewritten before they ever catch a regression, so we typically stabilize the riskiest flows first and automate around them, expanding as the product settles. A typical engagement embeds a QA engineer into the existing sprint cycle within the first two weeks rather than running testing as a separate downstream phase — quality gates get built into CI so a broken build is caught in minutes, not discovered in a release candidate days later. Performance and security testing get scheduled against real usage patterns and threat models, not generic checklists. What a competent QA partner does differently: test suites are treated as production code — reviewed, maintained, and pruned of flaky tests — and the test plan is revisited as the product changes instead of ossifying into a document nobody trusts six months in.
