Design engagements start with research, not wireframes — typically one to two weeks of user interviews and current-state mapping before a single screen gets drawn, because the biggest cost in a product is usually a well-designed answer to the wrong question. The first decision clients face is fidelity versus speed: low-fidelity flows tested with five to eight users catch most usability problems cheaply, while jumping straight to high-fidelity Figma comps feels more finished but locks in decisions before they've been tested, and reworking a polished screen costs far more than reworking a wireframe. We push for the cheaper mistake first. A typical design phase runs four to eight weeks for a focused product surface, longer when a design system is being built alongside it. What separates a competent design team from a generic one is the handoff: components and tokens that map directly to code, so engineers aren't reverse-engineering a static comp, and documented rationale so a decision doesn't get silently reversed by the next person who touches the file. Usability testing happens before launch, not as a post-mortem, and accessibility — contrast, focus states, screen-reader flows — is a default in the component library, not a checklist applied at the end.
